English Language Acquisition
The English Language Acquisition program at EES is a program designed to teach English to students who come to school with a first language other than English.
The English Language Acquisition (ELA) program at Edwards Elementary School functions under the guidelines of the Eagle County School District ELA program. Our first priority is to teach children English as effectively and efficiently as possible. This program is designed to run in conjunction with our traditional classroom instruction. There are three components: Literacy in Spanish in the early grades, English as a Second Language, Sheltered-Instruction in English in all other content areas. Included in the program plan is an emphasis on transition to English with support through English as a Second Language in 3rd through 5th grades. The goal of the ELA program is for children to be proficient in English at the end of 5th grade (providing they entered the program in Kindergarten or First Grade).
